A Midsummer Night’s Update

Preparations are in full swing for The Midsummer Night’s Happening and state51 are working flat out on set dressing and installation. There’s a few exciting additions to the line up too…

Steve Beresford will now be performing on upright piano with the Kirchin Tape Lab. Jonny Trunk and Robin the Fog will be playing out reels created by Basil Kirchin for improvisational performances just like this.

João Branco Kyron of Beautify Junkyards will be coming over from Lisbon to give us one or two Tropicalia flavoured DJ sets in Pan’s Garden.

Barrie Cadogan of Little Barrie (and pretty much everyone else) will be joining Soundcarriers to provide some extra guitar and voice to their improvised set accompanying Julian House’s psychedelic film.

And Jonny Trunk and Wisbey are promising some kind of Wheel-of-Fortune device.

A Midsummer Night’s Happening

SOLD OUT

A solstice celebration hosted by state51, Ghost Box and Trunk Records. Both record labels have invited a variety of artists and friends to perform at this very special party. There’ll be live music, artwork, film and merchandise spread across three specially designed and themed interiors: Pan’s Garden, The Youth Club and The TV Chamber.

The Midsummer Night’s Happening is a private party open to a limited number of invited guests and friends. To receive your exclusive invitation, pre-order the limited edition print of Julian House’s event poster from either the Ghost Box or the Trunk Records shops.

The evening will start in with a live performance of Justin Hopper and Sharron Kraus’s  Chanctonbury Rings, accompanied by visuals by photographer Wendy Pye. The evening also marks the release of the album.

Then Wisbey will take the stage, he of Dirty Fanmail fame and, who could forget, The Ladies Bras. He’ll be asking the audience to request their favourite soundtracks, which he’ll perform on the home organ in his own inimitable style.

Another Trunk Records performance follows next, The Kirchin Tape Lab with Jonny Trunk and his OST co-host (and member of radiophonics outfit Howlround), Robin “The Fog” Warren. They’ll be playing out live tape reels from the as yet, unheard archives of Basil Kirchin.

Next is a very rare chance to see the Soundcarriers. They’ll be in instrumental mode to perform a live soundtrack to a film by Ghost Box co-manager and graphic designer Julian House.

Pye Corner Audio will headline the evening with a live set of Martin Jenkin’s unique haunted dance music and submerged sci-fi epics.

There’ll also be…

An exhibition of Frances Castle’s Clay Pipe Music artwork,
DJ sets from Ghost Box, Trunk & Clay Pipe Music throughout the evening and later,
Join The Mangle to screenprint your own Julian House designed Midsummer Night’s Happening T Shirt.
A state51 shop with merchandise and records from all those taking part.

All this and fresh cooked food!

It’s All Happening at The state51 Factory, 8-10 Rhoda St., London, 21st June 2019, 6:30 until late.

Prints and invitations will be sent before the event.

One invitation admits one person, please bring it with you on the night.

GHOST BOX ORIGINAL PETER RECORD BAGS

Ghost Box in association with Trunk Records have commissioned a super limited edition of beautifully handcrafted Original Peter record bags. Available now only in the Original Peter shop.

Only ten of these beautiful bags have been produced based on the classic Original Peter navy blue 12″ bag. Hand made in the UK from double bonded waterproof canvas with high grade leather, brass and military webbing.

The front flap logo and text, designed by Julian House was intended to reproduce a moiré effect in embroidery. This required two embroidered patterns sewn in over each other, an unusual and surprisingly complex technique, but the overall effect is superb.
The Ghost Box bags also come with a pair of bespoke record stiffeners in canvas plus a a copy of “In a Moment… Ghost Box” the new compilation LP marking ten years of Ghost Box records.

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF CONCRETE AND CLASSROOM PROJECTS

The Parish Council would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Jez Butler (of Death by Chocolate) for his new album The Lighter Side of Concrete. Its a highly enjoyable and brilliantly executed homage to the work of the BBC Radiophonic workshop’s John Baker. Its out on CD on Disques Boum on 15th October and can be pre-ordered here and now. You can stream preview clips right here…

Also gratefully received from Trunk Records, Classroom Projects is a magical compilation of 60’s and 70’s school records. These gems  are much beloved by some of the longest serving Ghost Box artists and are in evidence here and there in their back catalogue. Fans of the Toys and Techniques blog will love this strangely beguiling selection ranging from the light and folksy to the darkest avant garde. Naturally enough Ghost Box are all over this one, its remastered by Jon “Advisory Circle” Brooks and cover art is by Julian “Focus Group” House. Available now with preview clips in the Trunk Shop, CD and DL only (the LPs are sadly all gone by now).

The Seasons on Trunk

A very exciting new release on Trunk this week, its The Seasons by the BBC Radiophonic workshop’s David Cain and poet Ronald Duncan.

Trunk says: “Originally made as part of the BBC’s Drama Workshop broadcasts, this album was meant for educational purposes. Coming in the later period of what is commonly known and remembered as “Music and Movement” or “Movement and Mime Classes”, the album was issued briefly as a teaching aid for the modern thinking 1960s classroom. The idea was to play the album and get the school children to dance, improvise, think and create to the sounds and words.”
David Cain
The original is now worth around £200 and probably one of my luckiest ever charity shop finds a few years back.(In your face Sue Ryder ! ). Its an album that’s very much part of the DNA of Ghost Box; the perfect example of the spooked educational media we  reverence and reference so often. A few familiar sounds here to BBC RW aficionados, with much more besides. There’s a disitnct folksy / early music feel with Ronald Duncan’s icy, not quite child friendly poetry running throughout.
A long time in the making for Jonny Trunk, this one but lavishly kitted out with photos of the original slides made to accompany the record, notes by Mr. Trunk, Jon Brooks and an interview with a surprisingly curmudgeonly David Cain by Julian House. This one definitely will be on the exams so make sure you get a copy. Vinyl and CD in the Trunk shop now or through the usual iffy channels for those of you on the Trunk mailing list.
